Examining Ignatius Sancho in connection with celebrations of the Declaration of Independence and the contradiction between America’s founding ideals and the historical treatment of Black people. Although the Declaration proclaimed that all men are endowed, Ignatius Sancho—a Black Briton, demonstrated not only the full humanity of Black people but also their artistic, intellectual, and civic contributions. In the presentation, we will explore Sancho’s influence as a writer and political commentator, discuss the social and historical context in which he lived, and provide a brief analysis of his music.
