During celebrations of the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, examine the contradiction between America’s founding ideals and its historical treatment of Black people through the story of Ignatius Sancho. Sancho, a Black Briton, demonstrated not only the full humanity of Black people but also their artistic, intellectual, and civic contributions. This lecture and performance will explore Sancho’s influence as a writer and political commentator, discuss the social and historical context in which he lived, and provide a brief analysis of his music. Dr. Robert McNichols, Jr., assistant professor of music at Morehouse College, will be joined by pianist Dr. Gregory Hopkins, who serves as founder and artistic director of the Harlem Opera Theater and minister of music at Convent Avenue Baptist Church.
